The workshop Tides to come: urban visions for expanding waters intends to engage creative thought on the impacts of climate change on urban areas. The focus will be placed on sea level rise and the challenges it poses to cities. The city of Porto, Portugal, will be taken as a case study for a hypothetical scenario where imagination and free creative yet conscious spirit will be the keywords of a global design and management proposal.
The workshop will account with a number of tours and Citizen Labs (introduced at FUTUREPLACES in 2011) on several topics underlying the workshop’s subject, such as urban morphology, architecture, civil engineering, landscape architecture, impacts of water level rise, society and lifestyle, urban design or public art. The Citizen Labs will constitute fast-action, practice-based workshops bringing together experts and citizens mutually benefitting from one another’s knowledge. Each Lab will have a product expressing its subject and limited only by each participant’s creativity.
Participants will be given the chance to explore news fields on urban development fuelled by a phenomenon as real as challenging, through a rich and intense contact with an array of entities, in a cross-sector approach and an informal work environment. All communication processes around the workshop will be based on a ‘cutting the edge’ philosophy questioning current urban planning and design premises. Participants will therefore have the chance to acquire or develop skills on design thinking, design making, participatory design processes, design for climate change, and communication.
The workshop is specially targeted at students from areas such as architecture, urban planning and design, landscape architecture or public art. Participation is free although registration is required.
The output of the workshop will be integrated in FUTUREPLACES 8, October 2015.
